Have fun Molly Lou Melon
While reading the book Have Fun Molly Lou Melon, the children learned new words like, imagination, inventing, engineer, design and create.
It sparked some ideas in our young inventers and got the creative juices flowing!
Design and drafting up their idea of a race car, that turns into a submarine.
There are the materials they collected to start the build.
Other friends became involved in the construction.
These girls are making phones with cups and string.
They added bells and a quarter slot.
We looked up some pictures of different kinds of phones.
We talked about who invented phones!
We are encouraging the children to make plans, create things and try it over and over.
Please feel free so send in your beautiful junk for creating inventions.
Buttons, cork, twine, tape, foil, tubes, bottle caps, cups, boxes, cotton balls....etc
This story teller has some great ideas that we also talked about in our class. That we can get back to nature and find some hidden artistic abilities or a designer or an architect within ourselves.
When reading this book at circle time our children came up great things to build and some great materials use. If you'd like to send in any kinds of recycled materials, natural materials or just something fun to create with, please send them.
Examples: cork, material, buttons, sticks/toothpicks/popcicle sticks, bottle caps, water bottle caps, empty containers or bottles, fake flowers, twine, foil, cups....

G wanted a hickey rink. So he figured out how to make one.
He invited team mates to join in and play.
Well done!! What a great activity.

Avocado Seed
"My mom showed me this seed and I asked if I could bring it to school." C
"What are we going to do with it?" G
"Let's cut it in half. " L
"Lets plant it, we grow avocados." C
So we looked up some ideas on the internet. We saw a way to get it to grow, but what will it grow? |
Here is C writing the instructions to grow an avocado. She sounded out words and wrote this on her on!
So, after the first day of inquiry, I decided to go buy some more avocados and see what the children wanted to with them.
"It's pretty black." E
"It's green inside." C
"It's very bumpy." M
"It smells like a pumpkin." X
We discovered that G LOVES avocado!!!
Any friend who wanted a little taste came over for a bite. Some children decided that it looked funny and would not try it.
"We have another seed, can we cut that one in half?" L
Yes! and we found out some people grate the seed and eat it too.
We also got our techie brains out and looked up some facts about avocado. Like: they grown in the heat, where it is warm like Mexico. You can make food with avocado, like guacamole, and it is good for your skin. B had a lovely spa treatment!
There are avocado farmers. They pick them from trees and send them to Zehrs.
We weighed them. Wait a minute, that avocado isn't real, its from the house centre. How do you know that? The children made some observations about the real one and fake one. The colours were different, one is heavy, they made different sounds when you tapped them on the table.
"This one is hard but a little squishy, this one you can't squish it at all."
"can we make guacamole?" Absolutely! And the cooking experiemnt begins.
So we cut them, we scooped them, we squeezed in lemon and shook in salt, we added a bit of cilantro. That was knew!!! What a stinky herb!
The children stirred and mushed it. Then....we got to eat it. Many children tried the guacamole on a tortilla chip. It was a first for many! Others only wanted the chip:)
Look how many friends got involved! This was a great inquiry. I can't wait to see what happen to our seed.
Then we found this silly video that went with our experiment..lol
Thank you Mrs. DiPonio for getting us started.
Please parents, if you EVER have something your child is inquiring about, send me a shout, we would love to explore with them. During these explorations, or purposeful play, your children are learning so much and becoming confident learners!
We didn't learn how to make guacamole, we learned measuring, turn taking, weight, technology, printing, sounding out words, being resourceful, other cultures and even touched on a new language, sharing and so much more.
